Internet of Things and automobiles
This week’s assignment reminds me the first week’s theme- the emergence of important devices for journalism, like a camera, an automobile, or a copy machine. Particularly, an automobile enables journalists to cover a broader scope. What if this essential device in journalism is connected to the Internet?
One basic and effective benefit a journalist can enjoy is the Traffic estimation and prediction systems. Drivers can get live traffic information on a road with this smart technology. This will find the fastest way to get to the destination, and reduce time on the road. Journalists can reach to the destination much faster and go many places during one day. Due to this advancement, we will have faster and more diverse news stories.
Also, automated driving is another function of IoT. When a car automatically drives to the destination, a journalist can do other productive works, such as contacting sources, searching for additional information, or writing an article. Of course, the efficiency of their work will increase.
The most fascinating thing that might occur is that IoT will record a trail of a whole reporting procedure. GPS on a car will be available to make a journalist’s personal log: When, where, how he goes during his work time. Moreover, he can enter an additional information, like what he had written on his notepad, about his travel. For example, whom he met or what kind of information he got at the location can be saved with the track. The data will be accumulated day by day, and location by location. Also, all information will be saved on the network. He can look through his driving records with a PC or a smartphone, whenever he wants- of course, even though he is not in the car. He can search for anything about his whole trip or specific events by typing a keyword. By doing that, intuitively he can learn what events have happened in a certain location.
Further, a news organization can integrate each journalist’s datum from their car. Then, a big dataset about report procedures and news sources will be created. A map dataset is based on locations, and tell what kind of news stories has been created in a specific location. It also tells who covers it, when it was covered, who the interviewees were, and what they talked about. Thus, this dataset is a kind of a huge library or a search engine of a news organization.
In this sense, an automobile will become more than a transportation in the future, when combined with IoT. The information about report procedures will be piled up year by year, and become an asset to journalists. An integrated and accumulated data (a huge dataset of each journalists’ travel) will help to sort the information by the timeline, the location, the events, or the people. Additionally, decreased time for the whole reporting procedure and pre-investigation will allow people to consume faster, and more accurate news.
