Hashtag Input Today, Amateur Journalism Tomorrow
For this week's assignment I looked at a possibility of future amateur journalism. In class, we have discussed multiple times how social media changed the way journalism, and reporting is accomplished. The evolution of social media in journalism has impacted news coverage in dramatic fashion. For instance, SportCenter has a Top Ten section in the script of the highlight show. The Top Ten covers the best ten plays in the world of sports. The play could have happened in a cricket match or in a golf tournament. SportCenter takes a look at every single play in every sport. However - there are so many games, and a plethora amount of sports to pay attention to so SportCenter incorporated the #SCTop10 on Twitter concept for anyone who witnessed an amazing play to inform SportCenter on Twitter using that hashtag. Brilliant idea - not only does SportCenter gain the assistance from sport enthusiasts but these fans have the opportunity to gain national exposure. It is a WIN WIN!
Nevertheless - in class we discussed how ideas gain traction so thinking down the road, SportCenter could turn to fans for more input on these plays. If someone caught a snapchat video of the play, SportCenter could mention to sport fans to snap the Top10 Snapchat account for a chance to be on national television. Now, the fan does not have his or her Twitter account (possible name) mentioned on live TV, but there is a chance the fan could incorporate a "stand up" on Snapchat which would be played on national television.
Example: Video of the play..(switch lens to selfie mode) "Matt Mika here at Fenway Park. I witnssed David Ortiz' walk-off homer in his last game of his professional career. Fenway Park is in a frenzie!"
This could be a terible idea, since most people without any skills on camera would butcher the stand up. However, it more or less gives SportCenter a live reporter at every single venue on every single night. Not only does SportCenter gain the footage of the play, but they access the live reaction to the play from a fan's perspective.
